We all know that women on average in this country make $.77 for every $1.00 that a man makes but what we seldom think about is that in order for that average to be true it is likely the case that the disparity exists in our own organizations. According to a study by Catalyst, 8 years out of the very best business schools, female graduates are making on average $31, 258 less than their male counterparts and are behind in terms of seniority as well. Why? According to the Catalyst study, The Myth of the Perfect Worker, even if a high performing female employee from a top MBA program does everything right she is still highly likely to end up paid less with less seniority than her male counterpart with an identical background if she does not 1- self promote and 2-network with powerful others in her organization. Self promotion is about making your achievements known. We know we can do all the work and do it as well or better than our male peers. But when it comes to tooting our own horn? We deem it unbecoming, distasteful, unnecessary, unethical, impossible uncomfortable, and finally we leave it undone.
SPEAK for Yourself will share the importance of self promotion and teach you strategies for incorporating it into you’re your daily practice at work in such a way that it feels consistent with your personality, work style and professional goals.
